    Commissie over Cyber Crime

Commissie over Cyber Crime Commission set to target cyber crime European Voice Issue Volume 6 Number 5
    by Peter Chapman

JUSTICE and Home Affairs Commissioner Antonio Vitorino and information society chief Erkki Liikanen are joining forces to draft an EU-wide action plan to combat online crime. The move comes amid growing concern that
criminals across the Union are turning their back on traditional methods, taking advantage of the anonymity of the Internet and e-mail to launder cash, run illegal child pornography rings and steal credit card numbers from online shoppers. Thwarting online crime is notoriously difficult.

    UK PUBLISHES “IMPOSSIBLE” DECRYPTION LAW
    ========================================
Today Britain became the only country in the world to publish a law which could imprison users of encryption technology for forgetting or losing their keys. The Home Office’s “REGULATION OF INVESTIGATORY POWERS” (RIP) bill has been introduced in Parliament: it regulates the use of informers, requires Internet Service Providers to maintain “reasonable interception capabilities”, and contains powers to compel decryption under complex interlocking schemes of authorisation.

Sunday Times: French spies listen to British calls

    James Clark, Home Affairs Correspondent

FRENCH intelligence is intercepting British businessmen’s  calls after investing millions in satellite technology for its  listening stations.

The French government upgraded signals intelligence last year.  Now secret service elements are using it to tap into
commercial secrets. At least eight centres, scattered across  France, are being “aimed” at British defence firms, petroleum  companies and other commercial targets.

Eavesdroppers can “pluck” GSM digital mobile phone signals  from the air by targeting individual numbers or sweeping sets  of numbers. Targets have included executives at British  Aerospace, British Petroleum and British Airways, according  to French sources.

Senior executives have been told not to discuss sensitive issues  on mobile phones, and BAe staff have been told to be
“especially careful” during campaigns for new business, such  as the current battle to supply Eurofighter missiles.

    Computable: Website over afluisterpraktijken

    (3 december 1999)

‘Binnenlandse Veiligheidsdienst mag onbeperkt telefoonverkeer afluisteren’

    JIR – Cyberterrorism hype

With the 1990s propensity to dot.com everything that moves, ‘hacking’ and ‘cyberterrorism’ have become subjects of intense media coverage. Almost daily, hitherto unknown security specialists warn of potential catastrophes: news that gets picked up by the media and crosses the globe with impunity. Johan J Ingles-le Nobel discussed the subject with programmers at Slashdot to profile so-called cyberterrorists and examine the viability of cyberwarfare.

    Afluisteren

Independent: This is just between us (and the spies)

The US National Security Agency has patented a new technology for monitoring millions of telephone calls, so watch out, it’s now even easier for the spooks to eavesdrop on your conversations

    By Suelette Dreyfus

    15 November 1999

The US National Security Agency has designed and patented a new technology that could aid it in spying on international telephone calls. The NSA patent, granted on 10 August, is for a system of automatic topic spotting and labelling of data. The patent officially confirms for the first time that the NSA has been working on ways of automatically analysing human speech.
